Andy is an Irish citizen with permanent residence status in South Africa. He has a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Geology from the University of Cape Town, a M.Sc. degree in Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics from the Royal School of Mines (University of London) and a PhD in Structural Geology from the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg). He is a professional member of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions, a statutory body which monitors the ethical behaviour of its members. Membership of this body is recognized internationally for purposes of competent persons reports used in public listing documents. Andy is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa and a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists.

Andy has worked as an exploration geologist and applied research earth scientist for 40 years for a wide range of mineral commodities, such as base and precious metals and, to a lesser extent, strategic metals, coal and uranium. He has worked in 20 African countries. He has also held various board level and senior management and executive positions within large mining and consulting companies in South Africa.

Andy has had published twenty-two refereed papers on regional geology, structural geology, VHMS deposits, komatiitic Ni deposits, porphyry systems, hydrothermal gold and antimony deposits. He has presented several courses in applied structural geology to the geological staff of mining companies and is an honorary lecturer for SEG.

As an independent consultant, Andy has worked on a wide variety of projects including gold and nickel exploration in Tanzania, various mineral exploration programmes in South Africa, Burundi and Madagascar, and a 10-year World Bank-supported regional mapping programme in Mauritania.
